Code It Own It '08January 31, 2008

Net2phone, Inc. is running a student programming contest that we think might make a good student project in networking or distributed systems.  The contest involves building an application that takes advantage of an "identity unification" system we have built and deployed, called PICUP: The Personal Internet Communications Unification Project. PICUP unifies the naming, presence, and security of various forms of internet communications, such as voice, chat, email, and so on.

We will be providing various forms of support for the students, including servers on which they can run their application and support large numbers of users, and a Resource Kit which includes the PICUP API, as well as PICUP-modified jabber and SIP server software.  We also provide servers on which the students can run their applications.

"Code It Own It '08" will accept entries through the semester, with a deadline of June 30, 2008. Contestants will be asked to create web communications applications using the PICUP infrastructure, with the objective of expanding the range of interoperating tools and services available to PICUP users. Students may work alone or in groups; they will retain all rights to their work, and will be eligible for awards totaling up to $50,000 in cash and prizes.

I have attached a document giving more details on PICUP and the competition. For more information visit www.picup.com <http://www.picup.com> or contact me at kwrisley@net2phone.com <mailto:kwrisley@net2phone.com>
