Tucek's on a roll tonightNovember 21, 2005

After much delay, the lounge lock has been updated to admit those who've paid their dues and reject those who haven't. Initially it was a software problem, but our esteemed president Ben used his incredible social engineering skills to obtain a new license for the proprietary lock programming software which was lost in a hard-drive crash. Victory seemed so close, but Murphy's Law had one last trick up his sleeve; the lock's hardware refused to talk to the computer at all. Luckily I fixed that with a little bit of tinkering and a lot of threats of physical violence against the lock. In the end, the lock folded under my onslaught and accepted the updates. In the process, I have also figured out how to bypass most of the user-unfriendly lock software, meaning future lock updates should take about 5 mouse clicks, instead of n squared mouse clicks. That is all.

New Computer in Lounge

That iMac that was just sitting in the corner now works, which means that we now have TWO (out of four) working computers in the lounge. To use it, sign on as ACM Member (there is no password).

Movable Type Working

According to ACM Secretary Joyce Santos, former ACM President Jim Tucek is "fast" and "amazing" in his Movable Type fixing abilities. The official recorded time of Mr. Tucek's "l33t feat" was 1 minute and 22 seconds. Despite hurdles presented by Apache 2's crazy directory layout scheme, Tucek has once again saved the day. After determining that the underlying MySQL database was still functioning perfectly, Tucek realized that something must be wrong with MT's configuration. The secret to his extraordinary success was editing both the global configuration file and the blog specific web-based configuration. After that, Tucek executed two perfect recursive chmod's, a feat the world hasn't seen since the 1984 Winter Olympics. When asked what he was going to do next, Tucek replied, "write an overglorified news post, go to Disney World, and gloat, although maybe not in that order."
